As a small business owner, it’s important to remember that no one is an island.
Networking is an incredibly important tool for helping you to grow and expand your business. By connecting with other businesses and individuals – even those you think are in no-way related to your business – you can gain access to new customers and clients, as well as gain helpful advice and build a bank of valuable resources.
Of course, the idea of networking can be daunting for some people. After all, it involves putting yourself out there and talking to strangers. You don’t want to know how many people patronizingly patted me on the head when I pitched my elopement business, wishing me luck, and dismissed me.
Don’t let the prospect of being dismissed by other business owners discourage you from networking. It really is one of the most effective ways to attract new clients and build mutually beneficial alliances with other business owners – especially if you do it right.
Here are some tips for effectively networking to attract clients:
1) Get involved in your community
One of the best ways to meet potential new clients is to get involved in your community. Offer to help out with local charity events, volunteer to help staff 5k races, or even sign up for adult-league softball or bowling teams. This will not only give you some great experience, but it will also put you in front of potential customers who may not have otherwise heard of your business or even considered eloping.
When they see how personable and community-minded you are, they‘ll be sure to remember your name when their, or a close-friend’s, wedding comes around.
2. Attend Industry Events
Another great way to meet potential clients is to attend industry events. This could include anything from bridal expos/shows to business mixers. These types of events are usually crawling with people looking for services like yours.
Business networking mixers are full of opportunities to…
3. Connect with other businesses
One of the best ways to attract new clients is by connecting with other businesses – especially those in complementary industries. For example, as an elopement planner, teaming up with a local florist or photographer can be a great way to get your foot in the door with potential new clients. You can collaborate on projects together, cross-promote each other‘s businesses, and even refer clients back and forth when one of you is booked solid.
Working with other businesses allows you to cast a much wider net, and giving a colleague a good solid lead will pay you back many times over. Favors aren’t easily forgotten in the business world!
4) Get social
In today‘s day and age, social media is an incredibly powerful tool that every small business owner should be utilizing. Not only is it a great way to connect with potential new clients, but it‘s also a fantastic way to stay top–of–mind with your current clients and keep them updated on what‘s going on with your business.
Make sure you‘re active on all the major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), and that you‘re regularly posting fresh content that will pique people‘s interest. If you can get people talking about your business online, they‘ll be much more likely to reach out to you when they‘re in need of your services.
5) Get involved with industry organizations
Nearly every city and town in the country has a local Chamber of Commerce you can join – and getting involved with them is a great way to network with other professionals in your field.
You aren’t even limited to your town’s chamber! You can join the Chamber of your nearest large city and reap its benefits as well!
Attend their events, join their committees, and make sure you‘re visible within the organization. The more involved you are, the more likely people are to remember you and reach out to you when they need your services.
These are just a few of the many different ways you can effectively network to attract new clients and gain mutually beneficial alliances with other business owners. So get out there and start meeting people!
