If you‘re like most people, the thought of setting up a home office can be exciting… as well as a little bit daunting.
After all, you‘re used to the hustle and bustle of the corporate world. Your dream is to get away from office life, and yet now you are creating an office in your own home!
I’m here to tell you this: you are overthinking it. You no longer have anyone to tell you what you can or can’t have in your office. Once you break out of the mindset of what an office is supposed to look like, you become free to create what everyone dreams an office should be!
The usual touches
There are plenty of ways to add personal touches to your home office that will make it feel like your own. One of the best ways to add personality to your home office is with photos. Whether it‘s family photos, pictures of your pets, or even just some of your favorite landscapes, adding a few personal touches will make the space feel more like yours.
Plants are another great way to add a bit of life to your office. Not only do they look great, but they can also help to purify the air and boost your mood.
Furniture is important as well. What kind of desk do you want? You also need a nice comfy chair.
My first office furniture decision wasn’t either of these. It was a couch! I dreamed of having a nice, long (so I could lay down and nap if I wanted), cushy couch in my office, so that’s what I bought first!
What ‘corporate’ wouldn’t let you have
If you‘re looking for something a little bit more fun, bend the rules a little bit.
You can always add a corner bar. This is a great way to unwind after a long day of work. You can’t hate “going to the office” if “the office” is where you grab that fun little treat at the end of the day.
I personally have a kegerator with a couple of beer taps in my office! Granted, one is always full of carbonated water (I love carbonated water), but even after all of these years, I still feel a little naughty pouring myself a pint of beer and sipping it at my desk while answering emails.
Another “not corporate safe“ home office addition you can add is a smart TV mounted to your wall. Is your brain tired from answering emails too long? Turn on the TV, launch Netflix, and watch Glee or Gossip Girl.
Your home office is your space
At the end of the day, your home office is your space. You can do whatever you want with it, within reason.
If you want to paint the walls neon green, go for it! If you want to have a dozen different monitors on your desk, go for it!
If you‘re not sure where to start, my best advice is to just start somewhere. Buy that piece of furniture you‘ve been eyeing, or pick up a few plants for your desk. Once you get started, you‘ll be surprised at how easy it is to make your home office feel like your own.
This is your dream, isn’t it? Own it!
